How to choose your first rudraksha

A rudraksha is the dried seed of the Elaeocarpus tree, worn across India for centuries as a mark of devotion to Lord Shiva. If you are buying your first one, four things matter: mukhi, origin, size and certification.

Mukhi (faces)

The lines running from top to bottom of the bead are called mukhi. A 5 mukhi (panchmukhi) is the most common and the one most people start with. It is traditionally associated with calmness and focus, and it is affordable enough to wear daily as a bracelet or mala. Higher mukhi beads (7, 11, 14 and above) are rarer and priced accordingly.

Origin

Nepal beads are larger with deeper, clearly defined lines. Java (Indonesia) beads are smaller and smoother, which makes them popular for bracelets and everyday malas. Both are genuine rudraksha; the choice is about size and budget.

Size

Bead size is given in millimetres. 8 mm to 10 mm suits bracelets and daily wear; 12 mm and above has more presence on a mala. Every product page lists the bead size and bead count so you can compare.

Certification

For higher mukhi beads we ship an X-ray report with the bead that shows the internal seed chambers. For 5 mukhi beads, which are common and easy to verify by eye, no certificate is needed. We state on each product page exactly what ships in the box.

Wearing it

Traditionally a rudraksha is worn after a simple cleansing with clean water and a short prayer. Every bead we send is checked by hand before dispatch, so it is ready to wear when it reaches you. Keep it away from perfume and chemicals, and wipe it with a dry cloth.
